We haven’t had some book love for a while here on the blog so I thought I would share two great new resources available from friends and colleagues of mine.
The Cuckoo Syndrome: The Secret to Breaking Free from Unhealthy Relationships, Toxic
Thinking, and Self-Sabotaging Behavior by Andrea Anderson Polk
Andrea is a good friend of mine who has recently published this great resource to help us understand how we can fall prey to allowing Cuckoos into our nest that rob us of our true purpose. Using the Cuckoo bird as an example, Andrea helps us look at the ways that we can unwittingly allow others to sidetrack us from tending to and nurturing our own “eggs.” We can also become our own Cuckoos by sabotaging ourselves. This book will be particularly helpful for anyone who has experienced spiritual or religious abuse as Andrea spends a portion of the book unpacking what she calls the “religion cuckoo” and the way it can harm.

A Light in the Dark: The Hidden Legacy of Adult Children of Sex Addicts by Kenneth M. Adams PhD., Mary E. Meyer PhD, LMFT, and Culle L. Vande Garde LCSW
This book is available for pre-order and will be released in February, but I want you all to know about it so you can order it now and have it as soon as possible. My colleagues, Ken, Mary and Culle, have done a brilliant job in finally bringing us a clarifying resource for adult children of sex addicts. Adult children of sex addicts are an overlooked and underserved population who are living with the impacts of being raised by a sexually addicted caregiver and often a betrayed partner. As a result, these individuals struggle with emotions, sexuality, and relationships. This book starts with each author sharing their own story of being an adult child of a sex addict. Then it moves into outlining key experiences, impacts, and patterns that develop for adult children of sex addicts as well as identifying the steps needed to heal.
